Kayaking is a weather-dependent activity.
We enjoy getting out on the water as much as possible and look forward to sharing the experience with you. However, kayaking is weather-dependent and not guaranteed during a Foxwalk Adventures retreat. Mike and Amanda will make the judgment call based on water and air temperatures, wind and wave conditions, and precipitation. We will do our best to prioritize kayaking by planning for it on good weather days, and as such, itineraries are subject to change.
What will the weather be like?
Daytime temperatures will likely be in the mid-70s to mid-80s, with nights in the 50-60s. Most days will be a mix of sun and clouds with mild humidity. Guests should plan for rain showers during the retreat. When kayaking on the ocean, the wind and sun often cause temperatures to feel more extreme.
What is the protocol for ticks & mosquitos?
Ticks: When you spend time outdoors in the Northeast, Lyme disease is a potential hazard. Prevention is the best medicine. We supply private areas and full-length mirrors for tick checks and recommend full body checks twice daily. We will provide further education and answer questions upon arrival. You can read more about prevention tips on the State of Maine’s website.
Mosquitos: Guests should expect mosquitos, particularly in the early mornings and evenings; however, bites can generally be prevented by wearing long sleeve clothing and bug repellent. Mosquitos tend to be more abundant in the early summer months (June – early July) and years with more rainfall.
What gear should I bring?
Guests are responsible for bringing seasonally appropriate clothing and are encouraged to bring a few outdoor gear items such as a water bottle and daypack. A full list of clothing and gear recommendations is provided below. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions. All camping, paddling, and cooking equipment is provided by Foxwalk Adventures, although guests may elect to provide their own gear if preferred. If you only remember one thing:
BRING LAYERS! You will get cold, you will get dirty, there will be mosquitos!
